How to Choose a Truck Bed Cover That Helps Protect Your Cargo

July 8, 23, 2023

You bought your truck so you could take advantage of the ample cargo space the bed provides. That doesn't mean you want to leave your work equipment, important tools, or other belongings exposed to the elements, though. A truck bed cover can offer great protection and possibly better fuel efficiency, but how do you decide which type to get? Heres our guide to choosing a truck bed cover.

Different Types of Truck Bed Covers

Bed covers, also known as tonneau covers, serve to give you peace of mind that your cargo is protected no matter where you go or what the weather is like. Just like bed liners, they are one of the best upgrades you can give your truck. Bed covers come in many different forms ‐ each with its own benefits. Let's take a look at some of the most common types of covers.

Soft vs. Hard Covers

Broadly, bed covers can be split into two categories based on whether they are made from soft or hard materials. Soft covers are lightweight and affordable and do a fantastic job of keeping your cargo out of the elements. However, soft covers might not protect your items from thieves should they try to break into your truck bed. If you're seeking both weather protection and added security, you should consider a hard tonneau cover ‐ though they may be more costly than their soft counterparts. After deciding whether you want a soft or hard bed cover, you'll be faced with the difficult decision of choosing what form your cover will take: rolling, retractable, folding, one-piece lid, or cap. To simplify the process, we've outlined the function and benefits of each below:

Rolling

Rolling bed covers come in both soft and hard varieties. These covers normally roll up from the tailgate towards your back window, giving quick access to the entirety of your truck bed whenever you need it. Most covers of this style roll up into a compact, secure package that enables you to drive with them securely in their rolled configurations, which is a massive benefit.

Soft rolling covers are primarily constructed of durable cloth or vinyl material, but hard versions are generally reinforced with solid slats. You'll likely find that both kinds of rolling covers are a low-profile, aesthetically appealing way to keep your items secure.

Retractable

Retractable bed covers are nearly identical to rolling ones. Their only difference is that instead of rolling up on top of the sides of your bed, they ride on tracks that guide the cover into a canister inside of your bed. Though they do slightly reduce your available bed area, retractable covers are potentially the sleekest bed cover on this list.

Folding

Like rolling ones, folding covers are available in both hard and soft versions. While bed covers of this type generally only allow for two-thirds bed access, they can be very easy to install, as they may not require any assembly or invasive vehicle modifications like drilling.

Hard versions of this foldable style add an extra level of security and functionality, as many hard foldable covers have sturdy cores that not only protect your cargo, but also enable you to distribute hundreds of pounds of weight on top of them.

One-Piece Lid

Also called hinged tonneau covers, one-piece lids are exactly what they sound like ‐ hardcovers consisting of just one piece. They open and close via shocks (like those found on an SUV's rear window), and are often color-matched to your vehicles paint. Due to their hinged nature, one-piece lids rarely allow for full bed access. However, some prefer them for their clean appearance and sturdy construction.

Bed Cap

If you're looking for the most room possible, a bed cap (also called a camper shell) might be for you. Commonly available in soft and hard versions, this cover style attaches on top of your truck bed and gives the appearance that your cab has been extended. Camper shells tend to be the choice of trailblazers and outdoor adventurers, as they can be used as enclosed, temporary shelters when needed.
