Lost Your Nissan Key Fob? Here's How to Replace It

November 25, 2021

Your Nissan key fob is your all-access pass to each driving adventure! But if your Nissan key fob is damaged, lost, or malfunctioning from a little water damage, your next Nissan adventure may be cut short pretty quickly!

Without a working key fob, getting into your Nissan and even starting your vehicle can be difficult or impossible. Are you in need of a new Nissan key fob? Here's how you can get a Nissan key fob replacement and what to do if your key fob is not working even after a battery change.

Lost Your Nissan Key Fob? Here's What To Do First

Misplacing your car keys can be a real bummer. It might even be more frustrating than having your check engine light appear or finding out you have a broken tail light after getting pulled over by a police officer. But losing your key fob doesn't have to ruin your day! Here's what you can do to find your lost Nissan key fob.

Look For the Spare Key Fob

If you've lost your usual key fob and you're in a rush, the first thing to do is locate the spare key. It's standard practice for a car to come with a pair of duplicate key fobs just in case one is lost. Make sure to keep spare keys in a safe, memorable place so you can find them quickly in times like these. Don't have a spare or don't know where it is? It's time to retrace your steps.

Retrace Your Steps

Where is the last place you remember having your key fob? Go there first and try to walk through all the places you went from that point until now. Think of any places you stopped along the way and whether or not you exchanged items you were carrying either in your hands or in your pockets. Retracing your exact steps can help jog your memory as to where you placed the key last.

Check Every Nook and Cranny

If you don't find the keys after a quick walk through of your previous locations, it's time to get detailed. Check the pockets of all the clothes you wore between now and when you last drove your car. Use a flashlight to check between couch cushions and countertops. Look in the bushes along the walkway between your car and your front door. In general, check all the dark, unexpected places a key fob might have fallen into.

Ask For Help

It can't hurt to have another set of eyes helping you find your keys. If you can, have someone else retrace your steps. They might spot something you would have otherwise missed.

How to Get a Nissan Key Fob Replacement

If you've searched everywhere and still can't find your keys, don't worry. Replacing your Nissan key fob is simple!

Visit Your Local Nissan Dealer

The quickest and most direct way to replace your lost Nissan key fob is to visit your nearest Nissan dealership. Replacing and programming a new key fob is a fairly short process that shouldn't take more than an hour in most cases. Make sure to call the dealership ahead of time to see if your particular key system can be programmed with or without your vehicle present.

In most cases, a key number plate is supplied with your key fobs for the mechanical key stored inside the fob that allows you to unlock your vehicle manually. Be sure to record the key number and keep it in a safe place (such as your wallet) to make replacement at the dealership easier if you lose a key fob again. Nissan does not record key numbers so it is very important to keep track of your key number plate. Using a key number is only necessary if you have lost all keys and do not have one to duplicate from.

Replace the Battery

If you're still in possession of your key fob but it isn't operating as it should, chances are it needs its batteries replaced. Most key fobs will require either a CR2025 or CR2032 battery. Key fob batteries typically last about two years before needing to be replaced. Exact instructions on how to remove and replace key fob batteries can be found in your owner's manual.

If your Nissan key fob is not working even after a battery change, the key's internal programming components may be faulty or damaged. It is also possible that the key's radio signal is being blocked by a stronger signal nearby, such as from a radio or TV tower, cell phone, or adjacent electrical appliances.
