Calling All Adventurers! The Overland Gear List for Your Nissan

February 4, 2022

Overlanding is vehicle-based travel to remote destinations ‐ which can be done via on-roading, off-roading, or a mixture of both.

Overlanders are often passionate about self-reliance, wildlife, the greater outdoors, and new ‐ sometimes challenging ‐ landscapes, with trips lasting anywhere from a few days to a few years. Since the main form of lodging is camping, avid overlanders typically equip themselves with the gear, supplies, and accessories needed to accommodate living from their vehicle.

Are you ready to embark on your own adventure? Make sure you're prepared for the road ahead with this overlanding checklist.

Overlanding Packing List

1. Emergency Road Kit

Overlanding can be extremely rewarding, but it can come with its share of difficulties too. From mud traps to blown tires, you want to make sure you have the equipment and know-how to resolve any potential issues along the way.

Do this by packing an Off-Road Adventure Kit specific to your overlanding vehicle and anticipated terrain. Stowaway spare lug nuts, heavy-duty jumper cables, reflective triangles, zip ties, etc. Other items you may want to include are:

  • Tire inflator & deflator
  • Traction boards
  • Kinetic rope
  • Hydraulic jack
  • Shovel
  • General tools like socket wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers

You'll also want to make sure your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. And if you'll be far from home, we recommend packing the exact tire type already on your vehicle rather than a standard spare.

2. Medical Supplies

Whether you're overlanding or going on a simple road trip, having a first aid kit or Adventure Medic Kit on hand is always a great idea. But even more important, you'll want to ensure that you know how to use the items in your kit.

Many overlanders recommend packing two separate bags ‐ one for minor bruises, scrapes, and ailments and another for more serious injuries. The first bag should include items like Band-Aids, antibacterial cream, acetaminophen, and alcohol swabs. Your second, most crucial bag should consist of things like gauze, Epi-Pens, nitrile gloves, wound irrigators, and splints.

Hopefully, you'll never have to use the second bag, but its definitely something you'll want to keep on hand.

3. Reliable Navigation

When embarking on your overland trip, you may have sufficient internet to get you from point A to point B. But the trails and backroads you're likely to encounter aren't usually as modern when it comes to connectivity.

Beyond a standard GPS, equip yourself with other reliable means of navigation. Pack trail and road maps, a backup compass, and download GPS apps that can supply you with off-road, offline maps when you need them most.

4. Extra Fuel

Along with the fuel that powers your body, the fuel that powers your vehicle is also top priority, so equip your ride with one or two extra cans of gasoline. You'll feel comforted to know that you have plenty more on hand should you find yourself with an empty tank during your trip.

5. Camping Supplies

Want to prepare a warm meal over a hot stove after a long day? Or maybe you'd like to comfortably camp in your car without worry. These things can only be accomplished by having the best overland camping gear on hand. Make sure you pack the right supplies using this checklist.

  • Tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mattress
  • Camping chairs and table
  • Camp kitchen (camping stove, dishes, can openers, etc.)
  • Water Filter
  • Cooler for food storage
  • Toilet paper and napkins
  • Firewood, fire starters, & fire extinguisher
  • Flashlights
  • Insect repellant
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Trash bags

6. Extra Food & Water

Stockpile your vehicle with two gallons of water per person per day. You'll also want to pack non-perishable food like MREs, dehydrated fruits and veggies, trail mix, granola, and jerky. These extra items may seem excessive, but packing an emergency supply of food and water could make all the difference when unexpected mishaps occur.

Get ready for your next adventure with Nissan Parts & Accessories. From hatch tents to medical kits, we have all the accessories, supplies, and gear you need for your next overlanding trip.
