Tips for Driving in Mud and Not Getting Stuck

April 15, 2021

Some drivers avoid muddy roads at all costs, while others relish in the adventure of it. Whether you're venturing into mud out of necessity or strictly for fun, the key to a successful drive is traction. Learn how to drive through mud with these tips for increasing your grasp on the terrain.

Use Four-Wheel Drive

Before starting your adventure, consider learning the basic mechanics of your Nissan 4x4 and the best techniques for driving in mud, so you don't get stuck or accidentally damage your vehicle. Engage your four-wheel drive, and enter muddy terrain in low range for maximum torque. Since muddy conditions can change rather quickly, you shouldn't wait until its too late to engage your front axle.

Choose Your Path

Choose the route you're going to take. If there are tire treads from previous drivers or drivers in front of you, its best to follow their path. Try to drive as straight as possible and use the momentum of your vehicle for forward motion. Too much steering wheel action may cause your vehicle to lose momentum and possibly rut out.

Maintain a Steady Speed

Work to find the sweet spot between maintaining momentum without increasing speed. Avoid hard stops and only use your accelerator or throttle as you maneuver through the muddy terrain. The muds resistance should work to slow your vehicle, and your throttle can be applied to create tire traction as needed.

If your Nissan tires start to spin without forward movement, apply less throttle and only begin to accelerate once the tires have regained traction. If the mud causes your vehicles front wheels to skid, take your foot off the gas pedal and work to regain control without braking or coming to a complete stop.

Know When to Call For Help

As long as you can move in any direction, you're not officially stuck. If your vehicle has come to a complete stop, try using your accelerator to rock the Nissan back and forth to gain momentum. If that doesn't work, move the steering wheel back and forth to gain tire traction. If you cant go forward, but you can still drive backwards, try reversing to reposition yourself.

Pro tip: Your floor mats can be removed and wedged beneath your tires to increase traction in slick situations. This way, your next wheel spin is over mats instead of mud. Purchase all-season floor mats from Nissan accessories, and easily clean your muddy floor mats by hosing them down.

If none of these options work and you notice your vehicle sinking due to mud density or constant effort, it may be time to call for help.

After your mud-driving excursion, make sure to clean your vehicle. Mud can eat through and rust parts of your Nissan, create issues with wheel and drivetrain balance, and damage essential brake components.
